“Small Scale, Big Impact” was officially launched in November 2016 as an official event of the European SME Week. FoodDrinkEurope organised a networking event in Brussels on 24 November 2016 with Commissioner Phil Hogan at the European Economic and Social Committee. Phil Hogan, EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner, shared his insights on how European trade and innovation policy can help drive SME growth in the food and drink sector.

Through individual hands-on presentations, SME entrepreneurs from all around Europe talked about what they saw as challenges and opportunities and provided insight into how the EU can continue fostering an entrepreneurial spirit.

The next step of ‘Small Scale, Big Impact’ was focused on connecting SMEs with Members of the European Parliament, thanks to the “Tag an SME” project, where MEPs put forward SMEs from their own regions as examples of companies that, regardless of their size, have a significant impact on the economy and the competitiveness of the food and drink sector.

MEPs Nicola Caputo (S&D, IT), Anneli Jäätteenmäki (ALDE, FI) and Renate Sommer (EPP, DE) hosted a networking reception on 20 November from 17:30 to 20:00, at the European Parliament, which was an officially recognised event of the European SME Week. Members of the European Parliament welcomed SME entrepreneurs from several Member States who presented their products and showcased their know-how and traditions.

On that occasion, FoodDrinkEurope launched a White Paper calling for specific policy measures to help food and drink SMEs thrive and grow.
